At its education event, Apple made significant updates to a number of their education products. iBooks has been updated to version 2, and includes support for textbooks, while iTunes U is now its own iPad app. The biggest news (we think) is the new iBooks Author app for the Mac. Not only is it free, but enables anyone to create rich content.

iBooks 2 & Textbooks

First up, Apple demonstrated its own take on the electronic textbook. These will currently be available for high school courses, at $15 or less each. Apple partnered with the biggest textbook publishers, McGraw Hill, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, and Pearson, who control 90% of the market. As expected, the textbooks feature quite a bit of interactivity, including video, diagrams, quizzes, photos, and updates.

Although you lose out on selling used books, the lower prices mean that a whole collection of books for classes still will probably be cheaper. Furthermore, over the course of a couple of years, the savings will more than pay for an iPad.

iBooks Author

Next, we got to see a new product from Apple, called iBooks Author. It’s found on the Mac App Store and is free. The basic idea is that you can drag and drop content into templates—or create your own—to produce textbooks. Based on the demos, it looks quite a bit like Pages-meets-Keynote-with-a-little-iWeb thrown in. The Verge even said that was like a modern-day HyperCard—we agree.

No word on reading iBooks on the Mac, though…

iTunes U

Finally, iTunes U got a much-needed update. Now, there’s an app where students can browse courses, much like iBooks, but also download or stream video and download materials to go along with the course. Additionally, K-12 schools can get in on the content creation.

Hardware

Although no announcement was made, one can hypothesize that the biggest cost of this push are the devices themselves. The Verge spoke with Phil Schiller about the topic:

The company had no announcements to make (and that sentiment didn’t change when I pressed reps for comment), but it will be an interesting question to see answered in the coming months. If Apple wants school districts to buy an iPad for every student, it’s going to take more than just a great presentation. When we spoke to Phil Schiller, he told us that he thinks the numbers work out favorably for school districts if you weigh the costs of textbooks and classroom computers against iBooks content and iPads. “It’s affordable for schools,” was the message.

The company did tell us that it works with districts to lease iPads on a four-year schedule — so that will potentially ease the strain on budgets.

If you want to see the event yourself, Apple has posted it.

Apple

A special tribute page was posted on Apple’s site, with the following text:

Steve Jobs [1955-2011]

Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.

If you would like to share your thoughts, memories, and condolences, please email rememberingsteve@apple.com.

Apple’s board of directors has also offered a statement:

We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away today.

Steve’s brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve.

His greatest love was for his wife, Laurene, and his family. Our hearts go out to them and to all who were touched by his extraordinary gifts.

Finally, CEO Tim Cook sent an email out to Apple employees on the matter:

Team,

I have some very sad news to share with all of you. Steve passed away earlier today.

We are planning a celebration of Steve’s extraordinary life for Apple employees that will take place soon. If you would like to share your thoughts, memories and condolences in the interim, you can simply email rememberingsteve@apple.com.

No words can adequately express our sadness at Steve’s death or our gratitude for the opportunity to work with him. We will honor his memory by dedicating ourselves to continuing the work he loved so much.

Tim

Pixar

Although Jobs is synonymous with Apple, he also played a major role in the success of Pixar, in a statement by John Lasseter, Chief Creative Officer & Ed Catmull, President, Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios:

Steve Jobs was an extraordinary visionary, our very dear friend and the guiding light of the Pixar family. He saw the potential of what Pixar could be before the rest of us, and beyond what anyone ever imagined. Steve took a chance on us and believed in our crazy dream of making computer animated films; the one thing he always said was to simply ‘make it great.’ He is why Pixar turned out the way we did and his strength, integrity and love of life has made us all better people. He will forever be a part of Pixar’s DNA. Our hearts go out to his wife Laurene and their children during this incredibly difficult time.

Other Comments & Reactions

There are plenty more statements and reactions over on MacRumors—it’s a rather complete collection from tech industry giants to political leaders. Three posts that really stuck out to us (and other tech writers) are the accounts from Walt Mossberg, Brian Lam, and a reflective story from Andy Ihnatko. A final favorite item of ours is from web comic xkcd (we put their mouse-over popup as a caption below):

There's always the hope that if you sit and watch
for long enough, the beachball will vanish and the
thing it interrupted will return.

We’d like to offer our deepest condolences go out to the friends, family, and coworkers of Mr. Jobs. Obviously, if it weren’t for his work, we probably would be having a little less fun with our technology. Thank you.

The Stanford Commencement Address

Also, it’s worth revisiting the 2005 Stanford University Commencement Address by Jobs—it’s probably one of his most personal, honest, and reflective moments on life:

We had covered Apple’s event live, and as expected, there were some exciting items, some disappointments, and a few surprises. The company basically re-released last year’s iPod nanos with modified software, and the iPod touch is now available in white. Both lines received price drops. The iPhone 4S was released, offering some extra power and features in an iPhone 4-style form factor.

Additionally, the iPhone 3GS will be kept around for free with a contract, while the 4 becomes available for $99 at an 8GB capacity. Apple’s official press info is below, documenting all the good stuff we’ll see on October 12:

Apple today announced iPhone 4S, the most amazing iPhone yet, packed with incredible new features including Apple’s dual-core A5 chip for blazing fast performance and stunning graphics; an all new camera with advanced optics; full 1080p HD resolution video recording; and Siri, an intelligent assistant that helps you get things done just by asking. With the launch of iPhone 4S also comes the launch of iOS 5, the world’s most advanced mobile operating system with over 200 new features; and iCloud, a breakthrough set of free cloud services that work with your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac or PC to automatically and wirelessly store your content in iCloud and push it to all your devices.

“iPhone 4S plus iOS 5 plus iCloud is a breakthrough combination that makes the iPhone 4S the best iPhone ever,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “While our competitors try to imitate iPhone with a checklist of features, only iPhone can deliver these breakthrough innovations that work seamlessly together.”

iPhone 4S comes with iOS 5, the world’s most advanced mobile operating system, which includes over 200 new features including Notification Center, an innovative way to easily view and manage notifications in one place without interruption and iMessage, a new messaging service that lets you easily send text messages, photos and videos between all iOS 5 users. iOS 5 will also be available as a free software update for iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS customers allowing them to experience these amazing new features.*

iPhone 4S also introduces Siri, an intelligent assistant that helps you get things done just by asking. Siri understands context allowing you to speak naturally when you ask it questions, for example, if you ask “Will I need an umbrella this weekend?” it understands you are looking for a weather forecast. Siri is also smart about using the personal information you allow it to access, for example, if you tell Siri “Remind me to call Mom when I get home” it can find “Mom” in your address book, or ask Siri “What’s the traffic like around here?” and it can figure out where “here” is based on your current location. Siri helps you make calls, send text messages or email, schedule meetings and reminders, make notes, search the Internet, find local businesses, get directions and more. You can also get answers, find facts and even perform complex calculations just by asking…

iPhone 4S includes an all new camera with the most advanced optics of any phone. The 8 megapixel sensor has 60 percent more pixels so you can take amazing high quality photos with more detail than ever. iPhone 4S includes a new custom lens, a larger f/2.4 aperture and an advanced hybrid IR filter that produce sharper, brighter and more accurate images. The Apple-designed image signal processor in the A5 dual-core chip is built for performance, and coupled with the features built into iOS 5, makes the camera one of the fastest on any phone. With iPhone 4S, the Camera app launches much faster and the shot to shot capability is twice as fast, so you’ll never miss another shot…

Improving on the innovative stainless steel external, dual-antenna design of iPhone 4, iPhone 4S is the first phone to intelligently switch between two antennas to send and receive. iPhone 4S now supports twice the download speed with HSDPA of up to 14.4 Mbps and iPhone 4S is a world phone, so both CDMA and GSM customers can now roam internationally on GSM networks.**

Pricing & Availability

iPhone 4S comes in either black or white and will be available in the US for a suggested retail price of $199 (US) for the 16GB model and $299 (US) for the 32GB model and $399 (US) for the new 64GB model.*** iPhone 4S will be available from the Apple Online Store, Apple’s retail stores and through AT&T, Sprint, Verizon Wireless and select Apple Authorized Resellers. iPhone 4S will be available in the US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan and the UK on Friday, October 14 and customers can pre-order their iPhone 4S beginning Friday, October 7. iPhone 4 will also be available for just $99 (US) and iPhone 3GS will be available for free with a two year contract. Siri will be available in beta on iPhone 4S in English (localized for US, UK and Australia), French and German. iOS 5 software will be available on October 12 as a free software update via iTunes 10.5 for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch customers.

iPhone 4S will roll out worldwide to 22 more countries by the end of October including Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

*Some features may not be available on all products.
**Carrier roaming policies apply. HSDPA availability and network speeds are dependent on carrier networks.
***Qualified customers only. Requires a new two year rate plan, sold separately.

A number of sources, including an Apple press release have stated that Steve Jobs has resigned as CEO, and the Board has named Tim Cook (Apple’s COO), as the company’s new CEO. He won’t be completely gone from day to day operations, though—Jobs has been elected Chairman of the Board and Cook will join the Board.

Apple’s press release covers everything on this best:

CUPERTINO, California—August 24, 2011—Apple’s Board of Directors today announced that Steve Jobs has resigned as Chief Executive Officer, and the Board has named Tim Cook, previously Apple’s Chief Operating Officer, as the company’s new CEO. Jobs has been elected Chairman of the Board and Cook will join the Board, effective immediately.

“Steve’s extraordinary vision and leadership saved Apple and guided it to its position as the world’s most innovative and valuable technology company,” said Art Levinson, Chairman of Genentech, on behalf of Apple’s Board. “Steve has made countless contributions to Apple’s success, and he has attracted and inspired Apple’s immensely creative employees and world class executive team. In his new role as Chairman of the Board, Steve will continue to serve Apple with his unique insights, creativity and inspiration.”

“The Board has complete confidence that Tim is the right person to be our next CEO,” added Levinson. “Tim’s 13 years of service to Apple have been marked by outstanding performance, and he has demonstrated remarkable talent and sound judgment in everything he does.”

Jobs submitted his resignation to the Board today and strongly recommended that the Board implement its succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO.

As COO, Cook was previously responsible for all of the company’s worldwide sales and operations, including end-to-end management of Apple’s supply chain, sales activities, and service and support in all markets and countries. He also headed Apple’s Macintosh division and played a key role in the continued development of strategic reseller and supplier relationships, ensuring flexibility in response to an increasingly demanding marketplace.

It’s only fitting that Steve would make the announcement on the 24th of a month (since he was born on a 2/24, the Mac was released on 1/24, and OS X was released on 3/24), and what better choice than Tim Cook, who has been running the company since January.

Additionally, Jobs had his own “press release” before Apple, naturally:

To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

Steve
