We were very impressed with XtremeMac’s original AirPlay, which we reviewed over a year ago. It offered features comprable to Griffin’s iTrip, but was much easier to operate.

We’ve had the chance to review quite a few versions of Griffin’s popular iTrip line over the last few years. Recently, we tested one of the newest models, and arguably one of the most universal ones—the iTrip Auto. Although its $70 price tag might turn some off from the beginning, it’s not your average iTrip.

Over a year ago, we took a look at Griffin’s iTrip, an FM transmitter designed specifically for iPods. Unfortunately, the biggest drawback with the iTrip was that it required you to load sounds onto the iPod to change frequencies, as well as requiring you to go through playlists to pick frequencies.

Many iPod owners have been generally disappointed with the performance of FM transmitters. While Griffin’s iTrip works well, XtremeMac has mounted a challenge to the iTrip’s dominance with the new AirPlay FM transmitter. We were curious to see if this $40 unit worked better than Griffin’s.
