iPads Replacing iMacs for Kids at Apple Stores

Not only are they arguably less breakable (at least in the tied-down-to-the-table configuration), but it also makes sense for hooking the kiddies earlier, especially if they play with one and then bug their parents to get one.

Of Course It’s Not Samsung…Probably RIM

Who else in the mobile space besides Samsung has criticized Apple so much? Microsoft (and Nokia) are positioning Windows Phone 7 as the alternative to everything, while RIM is barely hanging on to survive. HTC’s recent ads have mostly focused around promoting a carrier-specific device, while Google often just talks about how great Google is:

According to SlashGear, the company [Samsung] stepped forth today and rebuffed any ties to the affair: “Samsung Electronics Australia has nothing to do with the ‘Wake-Up Campaign’.”

For currently unknown reasons, a puzzling demonstration with anti-Apple cues occurred outside an Apple Store in Sydney April 22. A black bus boasted the phrase “WAKE UP” and a slew of paid picketers with coordinating signs paraded along George Street while chanting, “Wake up!”

Update: Apparently it may be RIM…and I was being snarky.

Former Sun CEO Critical of Google

Former Sun CEO Jonathan Schwartz (no relation) has done his best to mess up things for Oracle in the trial against Google, but had plenty of comments in emails on Google’s licensing policies (via The Brooks Review):

“Off the record…”

God knows. They didn’t want us to open source Java – they’ve already made some stupid comments about the GPL (the license of both Java and Linux – the foundation of what they’re building).

As for how they avoid those licenses, I don’t know – they’ve shown a frankly stunning naivete about free software – even their ‘alliance’ seemed all over the map, with second tier hardware guys and carriers. They appear to be believing their own hype – in my mind, Apple got mindshare because they had a great product. Google’s presuming their brand will carry to a phone… in my view, it actually has to *be* a phone, not an alliance. And they showed nothing…

But they did a great job of hyping Andy Rubin :-)”

Apple Axes Chomp for Android

Can’t say I didn’t see this coming a mile away (back in January):

I suspect the Android radio button will be disappearing soon.

Millionth iMac’s Golden Ticket

Ken Segall’s new book, Insanely Simple: The Obsession That Drives Apple’s Success, features a number of stories about the late Steve Jobs, and I thought the idea of having a Willy Wonka-esque celebration for the millionth iMac (back when they were bondi blue and had CRTs) was especially interesting. Let’s just hope a meme doesn’t start about it:

Steve’s idea was to do a Willy Wonka with it. Just as Wonka did in the movie, Steve wanted to put a golden certificate representing the millionth iMac inside the box of one iMac, and publicize that fact. Whoever opened the lucky iMac box would be refunded the purchase price and be flown to Cupertino, where he or she (and, presumably, the accompanying family) would be taken on a tour of the Apple campus.

Steve had already instructed his internal creative group to design a prototype golden certificate, which he shared with us. But the killer was that Steve wanted to go all out on this. He wanted to meet the lucky winner in full Willy Wonka garb. Yes, complete with top hat and tails.

Tim Cook Talks Patents

Tim Cook during Apple’s earnings conference call today:

“I’ve always hated litigation. I continue to hate it…I just want people to invent their own stuff.”
