You can turn the speakers on/off by pushing in the bass-volume knob, located on the subwoofer.

@James: It sounds like you have the original SoundSticks, as the SoundSticks II (and III) use a 3.5mm audio cable and work with just about anything that has an analog audio jack (or RCA jacks) (Macs, PCs, iDevices, video game systems). The originals used USB, and some users have had problems: https://discussions.apple.com/message/13122885?messageID=13122885

I have just got these lovely speakers off of eBay and had not seen all the palava with USB connection not working with my MacBook Pro 10.6.2 which is highly annoying as the blue LED lights up and my MBP can see the USB sticks as on option on the Audio controls but I get nothing Not even a hiss or a buzz which makes me think there might be something wrong with the internals but with no way to find out (i.e. plugging it into an old G$ or PC with usb 1.0). Anyone running these old beauties on a recent MBP or similar?

@Bob: There seems to be a few revisions of the SoundSticks after the model we reviewed - they added a power button on one model, so a change in LED supplier may have led to brighter LEDs in some runs (just a theory).
